Kingsley Deluxe 32

Kingsley Deluxe 32

The Kingsley Deluxe 32 is a dual channel, all tube, handwired 30W amplifier. It has all the same sounds as the Deluxe 30, but has the versatility of being able to pre-set two different tones and select one or the other or a combination of them both.

The power amplifier section is a non-negative feedback design that uses a pair of EL84 tubes and a second pair of any common octal base power tubes (6V6, 6L6, 5881, EL34 etc.), a 12AX7 phase inverter and a 5AR4 rectifier tube. The power amplifier section has its own tone control for tailoring the high end content fed to the power tubes. The power output can be reduced in two ways: there are two switches to turn either one of the output tube pairs on or off so you can run either only EL84 or octal tubes (15W) or use them simultaneously (30W). Alternatively, you can use the pentode/triode switch that when in triode mode reduces the output by a half but keeps all four power tubes operational. In this mode the sound is warmer and creamier, which can be useful for very bright guitars or for generating very rich, creamy overdrive textures. Also, both the 15W mode and the triode mode can be combined for an output of 7.5W.

Pre-amplifier channel 1 has controls for gain, volume, treble, middle and bass, as well as a bright switch and a 3-position gain switch. This channel can be set for a second clean tone, or anything from a mild overdrive to a full rock crunch.

Pre-amplifier channel 2 has controls for volume, treble, middle, bass and reverb, as well as a bright switch and an EQ lift switch. This channel provides beautiful clean tones at low to medium volumes and touch sensitive overdrive as the volume is raised further. The EQ lift switch disables the treble, middle and bass controls so that now there is only the single tone knob to vary the brightness of the amplifier (as well as the bright switch). The result is a very rich, pure tone that fattens up single coils, provides great jazz tones and frees up more gain for a very pure, organic overdrive tone when the amp is pushed.

Either channel may be selected by means of the front panel mini-switch, or a footswitch can be used to select one channel or the other. Alternatively both channels can be combined for a third sound using the "series" mode in the "parallel/series" switch located in the front panel. In the "series" mode the output of the channel 1 is fed to the input of the channel 2. In this mode the both channels' EQ sections work together - a feature that offers virtually endless tone-shaping possibilities. The "EQ lift" feature can also be turned on or off with the footswitch - you can even specify a desired amount of "lift" with the on-board level control.

The Deluxe 32 also comes with a double variable footswitch boost pedal, which has a level control for each channel right on the pedal. With the level at zero there is no boost. Turn the level up and step on the switch and the amount of pre-amp drive is increased. This can be useful for boosting clean tones or switching between on the edge tones and fuller overdriven sounds when the amplifier is already loud. For the overdrive channel (channel 1) the boost works as a boost at low to medium gain settings but at higher pre-amp gain settings its effect is to increase gain even further and fatten up the tone. An LED indicator light for each channel shows the status of the boost pedal.
